A recent article was published in a local Nottinghamshire paper which highlights the danger of DIY loft conversions with regards to Fire Safety.
A local fire crew were called to a landlords property after it caught fire and found that they could not access the loft hatch as it was too narrow.
Mr David Ewing, Building Control Manager at Gedling Borough Council was quoted as saying “a loft conversion can be a cost effective way of creating more space within a home but, it is essential the room is safe for people to use”. He went on to say that “carrying out work without the necessary permissions may also invalidate their house insurance in the event of a fire or structural problems”.
This particular landlord was subsequently issued with a prohibition notice which means a loft space and/or property cannot be occupied until the building meets building regulation standards.
